SUMMARY: The Reading Public Schools is in search of a Director of School Nutrition. The Director of School Nutrition shall provide each school child with food of high nutritious quality in an atmosphere of cleanliness, cheerfulness, and personal caring. This position is under an intermunicipal agreement with a neighboring community. The Director of School Nutrition works 220 days. This is a benefits eligible position. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The essential functions or duties listed below are illustrations of the type of work that is performed and is not an exhaustive list of the duties performed for by this position. Other duties may be assigned. Interviews, screens and recommends appointment of all cafeteria personnel. Posts job openings and retains updated job description files. Conducts in-service training programs for all cafeteria employees. Inspects school lunch facilities and operations to insure that standards of diet, cleanliness, health and safety are being maintained. Visits all lunch rooms and kitchens as often as possible to observe possible improvements in operations. Assists principals and teachers in the instructional phases of the lunchroom program Works with principals to develop a plan for maintaining an orderly lunchroom atmosphere. Purchases and maintains an inventory of all food, supplies and equipment. Plans and checks all menus for school lunches and special dinners. Makes application for government surplus food for school cafeteria use and directs its distribution, transfer and storage. Makes application for federal subsidies as they become available. Authorizes warrants for payment. Checks cafeteria payroll for accuracy. Processes all government reimbursements for payment. Prepares specifications and bid conditions for all items requiring such procedures by law or School Committee policy. Prepares monthly profit/loss statements. Files State reports as required. Ensures Food Service Department has capacity to provide catering services as needed for school building events. Assumes such other responsibilities that are consistent with directing a School Lunch Program in providing the optimal food needs of the school system. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Manages all cafeteria managers and employees. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of this unit. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Proven leadership ability Accounting/reconciliation knowledge Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form Ability to perform duties with the awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies Knowledge of nutrition, food values and menu planning Knowledge of recruitment and personnel management EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Required Bachelor s Degree, or equivalent educational experience, with a relevant academic major. Five years of successful experience in food service management, preferably in a school district. LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS: ServSafe Certification. The standards for this certification are set forth by the National Restaurant Association, which is accredited by the American National Standards Institute and required by the Reading Board of Health. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to remain in a stationary position for the majority of the work day. Must be able to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc. Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery (i.e., a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer). Must be able to communicate with other intra-company personnel. The employee must frequently use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and use hand strength to grasp tools. The employee will occasionally frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk while performing the duties of this job. The employee must be able to communicate effectively with other staff members in person and on the telephone. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The noise level in this environment may vary from moderate to loud, depending on location in building. The employee must be able to work safely and efficiently in public areas. The employee interacts with other staff members, students, and the public. The employee will need to maintain a clean, safe atmosphere for students and staff alike.
